Ira Hamilton Hayes was a Native American and United States Marines during World War II. Hayes is a registered member of the Gila River Pima Indian Reserve located in the Pinal and Maricopa counties in Arizona. He enlisted in the United States Marine Reserve on August 26, 1942 and, after recruiting training, volunteered to become a Paramarine. He fought in the Bougainville and Iwo Jima campaigns during the Pacific War. Hayes is widely known as one of the six immortal flag lifters in photographer Joe Rosenthal's iconic Iwo Jima raising the flag. The first flag hung on Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945 at the southern end of Iwo Jima, was considered too small and was replaced on the same day with a larger flag. Since there is no photograph of the first flag-raising, the second one, including Hayes, has become famous and widely reproduced.
